Research Interest

Dr. Khot works in the Agricultural Automation Engineering  research emphasis area of the Department of Biological Systems Engineering. His research and extension program focuses on “Sensing and automation technologies for site specific and precision management of production agriculture”. Special emphasis is towards integration of

  • Crop & Weather Sensing (ground and aerial systems)
  • Internet-of-Things enabled Cyber Physical Systems
  • Edge and Cloud Compute driven Decision Support Systems
  • Smartphone Apps & Information Delivery Technologies
  • Precision Chemical Application Technologies
  • Agricultural Machinery, Processes & Data-based Modeling

Brief Bio: Dr. Lav R. Khot obtained his M.E. from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand (2004) and M.S. from Iowa State University (2006). He received his Ph.D. from North Dakota State University in 2009. Prior to joining WSU, he was postdoctoral researcher at Citrus Research and Education Center, University of Florida (2009-2013). His research and extension program at Department of Biological Systems Engineering and WSU CPAAS focuses on “Precision Agricultural Technologies” with above mentioned emphasis. He is also the Director for WSU’s Agricultural Weather Network.

Dr. Khot is recipient of ‘Fruit + Vegetable 40 Under 40’ award from Fruit Growers News in 2021 and ‘2018 New Innovator in Food and Agriculture Research’ Award from Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research. He is an active member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ASABE) and serves as Associate Editor of MS and ITSC Technical community of Transactions of ASABE. He is ASABE ITSC Community chair (2023) and was Program Chair for the community (2022) and of ITSC 348 committee (2020).  He was chair of S1069 Multi-State Group (2021) and of the ‘Mechanization, Digitization, Sensing & Robotics’ Working Group of International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) (2018-2022).
