Brian Riley
About me
My name is Brian Riley. I received a B.S. in chemistry and a B.S. in biology from Eastern Washington University. I am currently a Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. student at Washington State University in John McCloy’s group. I am currently a senior research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) where I joined in 1997 as a high school intern. My areas of study range from non-oxide glass and glass ceramic synthesis and characterization (e.g., chalcogenides, chalcopyrites, zinc blende), solution-derived ceramics (e.g., sodalites), obscure oxide glass production (e.g., tellurites, heavy metal oxides), aerogel and xerogel synthesis (e.g., silicates, chalcogenides), as well as the capture of various radionuclides including I-129 and Tc-99 using engineered sorbents (e.g., chalcogels) and their subsequent immobilization in various waste forms (e.g., glass, glass ceramics, ceramics). In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing Frisbee golf, cooking, and playing cards with friends and family.
