Who is eligible?<\/strong><\/button>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div id=\"unique-id-1__content\" class=\"wsu-accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"unique-id-1__2178\">\r\n        <div class=\"wsu-accordion__content-inner\">\r\n            \n\n<p>Animals with or without chronic intestinal problems.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-accordion\">\r\n    <h3 id=\"unique-id-1__85693\" class=\"wsu-accordion__title\">\r\n        <button class=\"wsu-accordion__title-button wsu-accordion--toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"unique-id-1__content\"><strong>Q. <strong>When and what will we sample?<\/strong><\/strong><\/button>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div id=\"unique-id-1__content\" class=\"wsu-accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"unique-id-1__85693\">\r\n        <div class=\"wsu-accordion__content-inner\">\r\n            \n\n<p><em>Animals with chronic intestinal problems<\/em>: At the time of your pet\u2019s scheduled endoscopy, we will obtain additional 3 \u2013 5 very small tissue samples from the upper and lower intestines, and a small amount of blood, as well as feces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Animals without chronic intestinal problems<\/em>: At the time of your pet\u2019s scheduled dental procedure, we will obtain 5 very small tissue samples from the upper and lower intestines, and a small amount of blood, as well as feces.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-accordion\">\r\n    <h3 id=\"unique-id-1__47191\" class=\"wsu-accordion__title\">\r\n        <button class=\"wsu-accordion__title-button wsu-accordion--toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"unique-id-1__content\"><strong>Q. What are you going to do with the samples?<\/strong><\/button>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div id=\"unique-id-1__content\" class=\"wsu-accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"unique-id-1__47191\">\r\n        <div class=\"wsu-accordion__content-inner\">\r\n            \n\n<p><em>Intestinal tissues<\/em>: We will isolate adult stem cells from your animal\u2019s intestinal samples, and culture \u201cmini-gut\u201d, also known as intestinal organoids. This will create an avatar of your animal\u2019s intestinal segment that allow us to study it long-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fecal samples<\/em>: We will study the bacterial community in your animal\u2019s poop. This will help us understand which bacterial groups are the culprit or beneficial in a disease process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Blood<\/em>: We will isolate the immune cells from the blood and investigate how they will react in our mini-gut model. This will help us understand what role immune cells play in disease development or prevention.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wsu-accordion\">\r\n    <h3 id=\"unique-id-1__60223\" class=\"wsu-accordion__title\">\r\n        <button class=\"wsu-accordion__title-button wsu-accordion--toggle\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"unique-id-1__content\"><strong>Q. <strong>Why my pet\u2019s sample?<\/strong><\/strong><\/button>\r\n    <\/h3>\r\n    <div id=\"unique-id-1__content\" class=\"wsu-accordion__content\" aria-labelledby=\"unique-id-1__60223\">\r\n        <div class=\"wsu-accordion__content-inner\">\r\n            \n\n<p>Like people, animals can get intestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal adenocarcinomas. In fact, the intestinal bacteria in animals has a 60% overlap with human intestinal bacteria, and gut function is strikingly similar. Also, there are various diseases that happen in animals and people that are thought to be affected by intestinal health such as cognitive function, diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, and cancer.
