Teaching

Dr. Hongtao Dang teaches CSTM 254 Construction Graphics in the Fall semester and CSTM 483 Building Information Modeling in the Spring semester at WSU. Both courses require extensive development, such as restructuring the course content and developing a new syllabus, slides, assignments, projects, grading rubrics, etc. In Fall 2023, Dr. Dang taught CSTM 254 Construction Graphics with over 30% change in course content and two teaching innovations: 1) community-engaged, serviced-based, experiential learning, and 2) learn, inspire, foster, transform (LIFT) wise interventions. The first innovation was an initiative led by the SDC Director and Center for Civil Engagement. Dr. Dang partnered with Palouse Habitat for Humanity to provide unique and creative solutions that meet the community’s needs. Students volunteered half a day on the construction job site to work along with the future owner of the house, other volunteers, and the Habitat construction manager. Students felt they understood the course content better and could apply what they learned from the classroom to practice on a real-world project. The work contributes to the WSU land grant mission and empowers students to become active citizens in the local Palouse community.
