Recently, the Center for AI Research and Education (CAIRE) successfully hosted an online workshop via Zoom titled “Designing Standards-Aligned 3D Assessments with Generative AI: A Hands-On Workshop for Elementary and Secondary School Educators”.

Broad Regional Participation Educators Explore AI Applications

The workshop brought together over 30 educators from eight regional districts and service districts across Washington State. Participants included regional and school coordinators, school administrators and principals, as well as instructional coaches and science teachers. This broad participation reflects a growing interest in the responsible integration of AI in education and underscores the shared commitment among educators and leaders to strengthening instructional design and assessment practices across diverse learning environments.

Building Conceptual Foundations and Practical Application

The workshop was structured to move from conceptual foundations to practical application and ethical reflection. The workshop opened by introducing three-dimensional (3D) learning within the NGSS framework and discussing assessment development grounded in NGSA research.

Building on this foundation, the CAIRE team explained how generative AI operates through probabilistic modeling, followed by an interactive, which demonstrated how AI systems learn from data and highlighted the essential role humans play in the training process.

Transitioning to the application, CAIRE team guided participants in using the Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) framework to develop high-quality three-dimensional assessment tasks with AI support. Educators engaged in breakout-room practice sessions and were introduced to ADAPT-AI, CAIRE’s platform for standards-aligned science assessment design. Finally, the workshop concluded with a discussion on AI bias and climate justice, encouraging thoughtful and responsible AI integration in educational settings.

Refining the Future of AI Literacy

Beyond enhancing teachers’ understanding of AI’s foundational mechanisms, the workshop sparked deeper reflection on how AI can function as a supportive tool for instructional design rather than a replacement for professional expertise. CAIRE remains committed to advancing AI literacy and providing research-informed technical and pedagogical support to school districts.

CAIRE Research Lab recently hosted a regional workshop for Washington State educators focused on AI-supported NGSS-aligned assessment design.
