{"id":421,"date":"2018-04-15T13:18:50","date_gmt":"2018-04-15T20:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/labs.wsu.edu\/cleanenergy\/?p=421"},"modified":"2018-04-15T13:18:50","modified_gmt":"2018-04-15T20:18:50","slug":"cesi-lab-awarded-arpa-e-integrate-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/labs.wsu.edu\/cleanenergy\/2018\/04\/15\/cesi-lab-awarded-arpa-e-integrate-project\/","title":{"rendered":"CESI lab awarded ARPA-E INTEGRATE project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dustin McLarty, a Ph.D. in WSU\u2019s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, received a $678,014 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s Advanced Research Projects Agency \u2013 Energy to further hybrid power systems research.<\/p>\n<p>By developing hybrid power systems using pressurized solid oxide fuel cells, McLarty\u2019s proposed system design will increase the flexibility of the system during operation and lowers costs while still exceeding the DOE\u2019s efficiency targets. If successful, this new hybrid power system would bridge the natural gas powered energy industry of today with the all-renewable energy systems of the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe difference between a traditional fuel cell and the solid oxide fuel cell is what you can do with it, such as co-producing hydrogen and natural gas,\u201d McLarty explained. \u201cThis makes it a technology that works as a generator today and grid scale energy storage for renewable energy in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This grant is part of the DOE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/arpa-e.energy.gov\/?q=arpa-e-programs\/integrate\">Innovative Natural-Gas Technologies for Efficiency Gain in Reliable and Affordable Thermochemical Electricity-Generation (INTEGRATE).<\/a> INTEGRATE seeks to build highly flexible and efficient energy solutions to dramatically increase grid efficiency, reduce cost and add resilience.\u00a0 WSU is one of eight institutions that received a total of $16 million in grants for energy-centered research projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dustin McLarty, a Ph.D. in WSU\u2019s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, received a $678,014 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s Advanced Research Projects Agency \u2013 Energy to further hybrid power systems research.<\/p>\n<p>By developing hybrid power systems using pressurized solid oxide fuel cells, McLarty\u2019s proposed system design will increase the flexibility of the system during operation and lowers costs while still exceeding the DOE\u2019s efficiency targets.
