Information regarding virtual pre-k classes:

The Salem-Keizer School District has been able offer virtual pre-k classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  These classes are done at the family’s own pace using a web-based platform called SeeSaw.  Each week, the teacher uploads four videos and six activities for students to complete.  SeeSaw provides the opportunity for students and parents to view and respond to the teacher through comments, videos, or pictures.  This allows for an interactive component for students using the virtual option.  Virtual students are also scheduled for one-on-one appointments with their teachers through Zoom or Facetime.  This allows for further interaction and allows teachers to assess student needs.

Family Advocates also work directly with families to support their needs.  Family Advocates have been able to identify families who were lacking the technology needed to access virtual learning options.  The school district has been able to lend Chromebooks to families who need them as well as provide internet access as needed.  Family Advocates are bilingual as well, and interpretation through the school district is available when needed to support families in their home language.  The Family Advocates have provided valuable support in connecting families with needed resources.
