Media Literacy Work Group

Graduate students with an interest in media literacy are welcome to sit in on this research group, which meets approximately weekly during the academic year. These informal get-togethers explore how people engage with information based on how they access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act with content and technology. Participants discuss media literacy research and related projects on which they are working or might want to pursue. With an emphasis on collaboration and mentoring, the group shares and discusses readings, news, data, and occasionally has workshops to explore approaches for collecting data, doing analysis, writing grants, performing outreach, working with reviewers, and other activities of interest.

Participating students often submit manuscripts based on their work in these workshops to conferences and journals. Some have earned awards. Students do not need to be enrolled in the Murrow College to participate. Interested students should contact Erica Austin for more information. Sample topics of interest have included:

  • Media Literacy (digital, information, health, science, entertainment, news)
  • Statistical Analysis (psychometrics)
  • Research Methods
