Adherence to protocol came at a cost: at one point, half the children Evelina normally cared for showed concerning symptoms, and when she told the parents she could not care for symptomatic children, they removed them from her care. “Those parents cannot miss work,” she said, “so they left to go with another provider…to not lose their jobs, you see.”

As a small business, losing half her enrollment took a financial toll, and Evelina also suffered emotionally from losing children who had been with her for years. “It’s difficult,” she said, “You’ve already had them for a long time…a long time.” Despite the costs, Evelina believed that she made the right decision by turning away symptomatic children and by getting herself and her spouse vaccinated early because no one in her center or family got sick.
