Our Interview with In\u00e9s <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In\u00e9s opened her childcare almost 40 years ago. She now cares for fewer children than she is licensed for so that her young adult daughters, who once assisted her, could pursue their own interests.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the start of the pandemic, In\u00e9s said her children adapted easily to altered routines, as did most, but not all, of their families. One parent was so afraid to come into In\u00e9s\u2019s house for drop-off and pick-up that her hands would shake, and she would say, \u201cI\u2019m afraid of getting sick.\u201d Despite In\u00e9s\u2019s assurances that no children or family members had gotten Covid, this parent requested changes that went well beyond public health recommendations. The situation intensified, and to avoid disruption, In\u00e9s said she had to tell the parent, \u201cI\u2019m really sorry\u2026but I can\u2019t keep taking care of your kids.\u201d This was unprecedented for In\u00e9s, who in her decades of caring for children, had \u201cnever fired anyone, ever.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\u00e9s disclosed that just a few weeks before our interview, she had been diagnosed with a serious illness (not Covid) requiring extensive treatment, forcing her to close her center. Most difficult for her was, \u201cHow am I going to tell the parents that I\u2019m not going to care for their kids?\u201d But she did tell them, and not long before our interview, upon learning of the closure and the reasons for it, many families came to visit her. As a testament to her importance in children\u2019s lives, is the example of a family with siblings ranging in age from 6 to 22 years old, all of whom she cared for during their entire childhoods.  The six-year-old embraced her and said, \u201cIn\u00e9s \u2026 don\u2019t be sick \u2026 because I love you like a mom.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuestra Entrevista con In\u00e9s <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In\u00e9s abri\u00f3 su centro hace casi 40 a\u00f1os. Ella ahora cuida a menos ni\u00f1os de los que tiene licencia, para que sus hijas adultas j\u00f3venes, quienes antes le apoyaban, puedan dedicarse a sus intereses propios. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desde el inicio de la pandemia, In\u00e9s dijo que sus ni\u00f1os se adaptaron f\u00e1cilmente a las rutinas alteradas, as\u00ed como la mayor\u00eda – pero no todas \u2013 las familias. Una madre ten\u00eda tanto miedo de entrar a la casa de In\u00e9s para dejar y recoger a sus hijos que le temblaban las manos, y dec\u00eda \u201cEs que yo tengo miedo a enfermarme.\u201d A pesar de las reconfirmaciones de In\u00e9s, de que ning\u00fan ni\u00f1o ni familiar se hab\u00eda contagiado de Covid, esta madre pidi\u00f3 cambios que sobrepasaron, por mucho, las recomendaciones de salud p\u00fablica. La situaci\u00f3n intensific\u00f3, as\u00ed que para evitar disrupciones, In\u00e9s nos coment\u00f3 que tuvo que decirle a la madre, \u201cLo siento mucho \u2026 pero no te puedo seguir cuidando a los ni\u00f1os.\u201d Fue una ocurrencia sin precedentes para In\u00e9s, quien en sus d\u00e9cadas de cuidar a ni\u00f1os \u201cno hab\u00eda despedido a alguien, nunca.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\u00e9s revel\u00f3 que tan solo unas pocas semanas antes de nuestra entrevista, a ella le hab\u00edan diagnosticado con una enfermedad grave (no Covid) que requer\u00eda de un tratamiento extensivo, oblig\u00e1ndole a cerrar su centro.  Lo m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil para ella fue, \u201c\u00bfC\u00f3mo les voy a decir a los pap\u00e1s que no les voy a cuidar a los ni\u00f1os?\u201d Pero s\u00ed les dijo, y no mucho tiempo antes de nuestra entrevista, al enterarse del cierre y sus razones, muchas familias vinieron a visitarla. Como un testamento a la importancia que tiene ella en la vida de los ni\u00f1os est\u00e1 el ejemplo de una familia con hermanos cuyas edades van de 6 a 22 a\u00f1os. Ella los cuid\u00f3 a todos durante su ni\u00f1ez entera.  El ni\u00f1o de seis a\u00f1os la abraz\u00f3 y le dijo, \u201cIn\u00e9s \u2026 que no est\u00e9 mala \u2026 porque te quiero como una mam\u00e1.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
