About My Picture<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year we have a parent-child picnic, where [the children] bring picnic baskets and we fill it with food the children prepare, and we\u2019re not doing that this year. Two of my students were quarantining after their trip, so this was our version of what we usually do \u2026 super small. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children are still happy, and it was still a treat for them. Normally we eat at a picnic table but this time we had the baskets. They didn\u2019t know that this was a completely different experience \u2026 because they\u2019re so young, this is just it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We just continued in the way we could do it \u2026 just realized that the children, just health and happiness was what we really had to be concerned with. We didn\u2019t have [the family picnic] last year, either. Everyone\u2019s just kind of \u2026 positive.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Our Interview<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lauren runs an in-home Montessori school for children ages 18 months-3 years, and she voiced a number of unexpected positives that came about during the pandemic. \u201cI\u2019m really fortunate because I\u2019m the owner \u2026 and the teacher \u2026 this is my business,\u201d she said, referring to how, compared to employees in larger Montessori programs, she could make all decisions on whether to remain open. Another positive Lauren cited was the support from the Montessori community and her licensing team, who gave supplies and encouragement. She also observed positive interactions among the children in her care, saying, \u201cThis group appreciates playing with each other \u2026  they\u2019re super excited to play outside, games and imagination, they seem super extra enthused.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But operating during the pandemic has not been without concerns. Lauren worried about becoming infected and passing it on to her students. Communication with parents was suboptimal due to changed procedures. Plus, Lauren had trouble sorting through sometimes conflicting federal and state Covid guidelines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most critically, Lauren wondered whether she could persist beyond the initial economic loss she suffered, saying, \u201cImmediately I lost students, it was a financial concern, would they come back?\u201d She avoided enrolling new children to preserve the classroom dynamic and to minimize added infection risk. Following those decisions, Lauren said, \u201cI calculated my hourly wage, and I was like, \u2018Don\u2019t do that again!\u2019 I\u2019m willing to not make money for a while, but we\u2019ll close \u2026 if I have to socially distance one-year-olds \u2026 and if we start losing money.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Todos los a\u00f1os hacemos un picnic de padres e hijos, donde [los ni\u00f1os] llevan canastas de picnic y las llenamos con comida preparada por los ni\u00f1os, y no lo vamos a hacer este a\u00f1o. Dos de mis estudiantes estaban en cuarentena despu\u00e9s de su viaje, as\u00ed que esto fue nuestra versi\u00f3n de lo que usualmente hacemos \u2026 s\u00faper peque\u00f1o. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Todav\u00eda est\u00e1n felices los ni\u00f1os, y todav\u00eda fue un gustito para ellos.  Normalmente comemos en una mesa de picnic, pero en esta ocasi\u00f3n solo ten\u00edamos las canastas. Ellos no sab\u00edan que esta experienca era totalmente diferente \u2026 porque ellos son tan j\u00f3venes, solo es esto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simplemente seguimos de la manera en la que se pod\u00eda \u2026 simplemente nos dimos cuenta de que los ni\u00f1os, o sea, la salud y la felicidad, era lo que en verdad nos ten\u00eda que preocupar. Nuestra Entrevista <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lauren opera una escuela Montessori en su casa, para ni\u00f1os entre las edades de 18 meses y 3 a\u00f1os, y ella expres\u00f3 un n\u00famero de aspectos positivos inesperados que surgieron durante la pandemia. “Soy muy afortunada porque soy la due\u00f1a \u2026 y la maestra \u2026 es esto mi negocio,” nos dijo, refiri\u00e9ndose a como, en comparaci\u00f3n a empleados de programas de Montessori m\u00e1s grandes, ella pod\u00eda tomar todas las decisiones sobre mantenerse abierto o no. Otro aspecto positivo que coment\u00f3 Lauren fue el apoyo de la comunidad Montessori y de su equipo de autorizaci\u00f3n, que le dio suministros y aliento. Ella tambi\u00e9n observ\u00f3 interacciones positivas entre los ni\u00f1os bajo su cuidado, diciendo “Este grupo valora jugar entre s\u00ed \u2026 est\u00e1n s\u00faper emocionados por jugar afuera, juegos e imaginaci\u00f3n, parecen s\u00faper extra entusiasmados.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pero, operar durante la pandemia no es asunto sin preocupaciones. Lauren se preocupaba por contagiarse ella y luego pas\u00e1rselo a sus estudiantes.
