\u2026 We were open and we were functioning and we were doing things \u2026 Behind the scenes, I was just scrambling to figure out how to adapt, how to play this in this environment \u2026 and be OK.<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

About My Photo<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last October amidst Covid, we got out to this farm, the pumpkin patch \u2026 About half the kids from the daycare were able to make it. It was not a sanctioned field trip. It was a Saturday. And we met parents [there] with their kids \u2026 it was one of those rare opportunities to actually be out in public and see each other outside of the daycare. And it was also the first occasion during Covid where we were able to be out and do something \u2026<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photo itself is kind of representative of a few things. It’s the mountain to climb \u2026 the struggle along the way \u2026 We have so many toddlers that there’s no such thing as social distancing \u2026 We’ve long since accepted the fate that if we were exposed, it was just it was going to be inevitable \u2026 In the daycare space itself, we have our masks \u2026 we always do.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to that different setting was huge for us because you’re always in that same environment. It’s really nice to be able to relax every once in a while, especially this year \u2026 there’s been plenty of challenges \u2026 so many.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Interview with Lee<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a lengthy wait list,\u201d Lee said. He and his wife opened their in-home childcare for preschool-age children about three years ago, and Lee believed that his advanced degree and years of public school teaching helped attract families to their childcare.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of staying open in the Covid era, Lee said, \u201cTen of our twelve families are in the medical field \u2026 all front line \u2026 They knew what challenges they were facing, and so they were cooperative \u2026 We just made it work.\u201d That was true initially, but as the months wore on, Lee said that some parents objected to safety measures. Following guidelines and maintaining good relationships became a difficult balancing act in the case of more than one family, a challenge that he tried \u201cto handle delicately.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee went on to frame parents\u2019 resistance as, \u201cjust another obstacle\u2026another thing to deal with,\u201d in a long line of life challenges he had successfully managed. He talked about growing up in a poor family, joining the military, and getting a medical discharge after life-threatening injury. Summing up the situation, Lee said, \u201cIt’s not been easy, but for me it’s another bump in the road\u2026you just roll with the punches. And that’s what this year has been \u2026 When we had the one parent \u2026 who didn’t want to comply, didn’t want to go with the restrictions \u2026 that was frustrating. For us, Covid is scary.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Est\u00e1bamos abiertos y est\u00e1bamos trabajando y hac\u00edamos cosas \u2026 Tras bambalinas, yo simplemente peleaba para averiguar c\u00f3mo adaptarme, c\u00f3mo hacerle en este ambiente \u2026 y estar bien.<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sobre Mi Foto<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

En octubre del a\u00f1o pasado, en medio del Covid, nos fuimos a esta granja, el huerto de calabzas \u2026 Alrededor de la mitad de los ni\u00f1os de la guarder\u00eda pudieron llegar. No fue una excursi\u00f3n sancionada. Y nos juntamos con los padres [all\u00ed], con sus hijos \u2026 fue una de esas raras oportunidades para en realidad estar en p\u00fablico y vernos fuera de la guarder\u00eda. Y tambi\u00e9n fue la primera vez durante el Covid donde pudimos estar afuera y hacer algo …<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

La foto en s\u00ed es como representativa de un par de cosas. Es la monta\u00f1a a subir \u2026 la lucha en el camino \u2026 Tenemos a tantos ni\u00f1os de primeros pasos que no existe tal cosa como el distanciamiento social \u2026 Aceptamos desde hace mucho el destino de que si llegamos a estar expuestos, era porque simplemente era inevitable\u2026 En el espacio de la guarder\u00eda en s\u00ed, tenemos nuestros cubrebocas \u2026 siempre los tenemos.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Llegar a ese sitio diferente fue enorme para nosotros porque siempre est\u00e1s en ese mismo ambiente.  Es realmente bonito poder relajarse de vez en cuando, especialmente este a\u00f1o \u2026 ha habido bastantes retos \u2026 much\u00edsimos.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuestra Entrevista con Lee<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTenemos una lista de espera extensa,\u201d dijo Lee. \u00c9l y su esposa abrieron su centro de cuidado infantil en casa para ni\u00f1os preescolares hace aproximadamente tres a\u00f1os, y Lee cree su que su t\u00edtulo universitario avanzado y sus a\u00f1os de experiencia dando clases en escuelas p\u00fablicas, ayudaron a atraer a familias a su centro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con respeto a permanecer abierto durante la \u00e9poca de Covid, Lee dijo, \u201cDiez de nuestras doce familias trabajan en el campo m\u00e9dico \u2026 todos de primera l\u00ednea \u2026 Ellos sab\u00edan a qu\u00e9 retos se enfrentaban y entonces estaban dispuestos a cooperar \u2026 Simplemente lo hicimos funcionar.\u201d  Esto fue verdad al principio, pero conforme iban alargando los meses, Lee dijo que algunos padres pusieron objeciones a las medidas de seguridad. Seguir las normas y todav\u00eda mantener buenas relaciones se convirti\u00f3 en un acto de malabarismo para con m\u00e1s de una familia, un reto que \u00e9l intent\u00f3 \u201cmanejar delicadamente.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee luego caracteriz\u00f3 a la resistencia de los padres como \u201ctan solo un obst\u00e1culo m\u00e1s \u2026 otra cosa con que lidiar,\u201d parte de una larga lista de retos de vida que \u00e9l hab\u00eda superado exitosamente. \u00c9l habl\u00f3 sobre sus experiencias: creci\u00f3 en una familia pobre, se uni\u00f3 a las fuerzas militares, y recibi\u00f3 un licenciamiento honoroso despu\u00e9s de una lesi\u00f3n que puso en riesgo su vida. A manera de resumen, Lee dijo, \u201cNo ha sido f\u00e1cil, pero para m\u00ed es otro obst\u00e1culo m\u00e1s \u2026 simplemente hay que aprender a los golpes.  Y as\u00ed ha sido este a\u00f1o \u2026 cuando tuvimos un padre de familia \u2026 que no quiso cumplir, no quiso seguir las restricciones \u2026 eso fue frustrante.
