About My Picture<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s their first day of school. They\u2019re kindergartners. First day of kindergarten and online kindergarten and life \u2026 [At school] They\u2019re ten feet apart \u2026 they have to wear their mask all day \u2026 When they come back \u2026 huge change for me too, I\u2019ve been doing this for over 30 years \u2026 I became a teacher! I went from computer to computer, had my hot spot on my phone going, my iPad going, as well as my computer \u2026 five kiddos online. <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My children went through a lot of emotions \u2026 We haven\u2019t had a dog in our home for like two years \u2026 My school age kids, they\u2019re all lonely for their friends \u2026 the littler ones, they\u2019re used to all the kids in the daycare, those are their friends. But in 3rd<\/sup> grade, 4th<\/sup> grade, they didn\u2019t get to see their friends, and that was hard. So I got a dog. A little puppy, and they love it, they love to cuddle, hold the puppy, they just love it. It was a good change of pace for them. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like that the kids are happy \u2026 It\u2019s a struggle \u2026 after online school is over, they\u2019re on individual studies \u2026 and I hate Chromebooks! Some days \u2026 you want to take it and throw it against the wall \u2026 it\u2019s the most difficult time I\u2019ve done in childcare. It\u2019s been very difficult keeping everything organized, following all the rules and guidelines. Kids aren\u2019t aware of all that\u2019s going on. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Our Interview with Belle<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belle obtained her first childcare license on a military base overseas and recalled intensive monitoring of her childcare, with licensors visiting four times monthly, who \u201cwould even check the temperature in your refrigerator.\u201d After serving children and families for decades, Belle had intended to retire, but once the pandemic hit, she decided to stay on until her children returned to school full-time.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On any given day, Belle had ten children in her home, including toddlers and remote-schooled children from grades kindergarten through six. \u201cIt\u2019s like you go from one computer to the next computer to the next, three hours a day,\u201d she said. Her complex schedule involved supervising remote schooling, preparing lunches, ensuring quiet time for younger children, and meeting with children\u2019s teachers. \u201cFive different teachers \u2026 [they] would text me and e-mail and say \u2018she wasn\u2019t on task.\u2019 \u201d Belle became responsible for reinforcing class lessons and making sure children turned in homework. \u201cYou are responsible for them more than their parent is during the day … it\u2019s been more challenging, that\u2019s all I can say.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the challenges, however, Belle found an important benefit. \u201cI must admit that my relationships with my parents are even stronger \u2026 The parents and I had to get on the same page with the schoolwork and we did. The level of our communication has been deeper.\u201d She added, \u201cI feel sorry for \u2026 the parents, after they work, they have hit the \u2018done\u2019 button, and that puts more responsibility on the child, the teachers, and me.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es su primer d\u00eda de clases. Son ni\u00f1os de kinder. El primer d\u00eda de kinder y de kinder en l\u00ednea y de la vida en l\u00ednea \u2026 [En la escuela] Tienen 10 pies de distancia \u2026 tienen que llevar la mascarilla todo el d\u00eda \u2026 Cuando regresan \u2026 un gran cambio para m\u00ed, tambi\u00e9n, llevo m\u00e1s de 30 a\u00f1os haciendo esto \u2026 \u00a1Me volv\u00ed maestra! Yo iba de computadora a computadora, ten\u00eda prendido el acceso wifi de mi celular, ten\u00eda prendido el iPad, mi computadora, tambi\u00e9n \u2026 cinco chiquillos en l\u00ednea. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mis ni\u00f1os pasaron por muchas emociones \u2026 llev\u00e1bamos como dos a\u00f1os sin tener perro en nuestra casa \u2026 Mis ni\u00f1os de edad escolar, todos a\u00f1oran estar con sus amigos \u2026 los m\u00e1s chiquitos, ellos est\u00e1n acostumbrados a todos los ni\u00f1os en la guarder\u00eda, ellos son sus amigos. Pero en tercero y cuarto de primaria, no les toc\u00f3 ver a sus amigos y eso fue dif\u00edcil. Entonces consegu\u00ed un perro. Cachorrito, y ellos lo adoran, les encanta acurrucarlo, tenerlo en brazos, simplemente lo adoran. Fue un buen cambio de ritmo para ellos. <\/em>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A m\u00ed me agrada que los ni\u00f1os est\u00e9n felices \u2026 Es una lucha \u2026 despu\u00e9s de que se acaba la escuela en l\u00ednea, tienen estudios individuales \u2026 \u00a1y yo odio los Chromebooks!  Algunos d\u00edas \u2026 quieres agarrarlo y aventarlo contra la pared \u2026 es el tiempo m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil que me ha tocado en el cuidado de ni\u00f1os.  Ha sido muy dif\u00edcil mantener todo organizado, seguir todas las reglas y pautas.  Los ni\u00f1os no est\u00e1n consicentes de todo lo que est\u00e1 pasando. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuestra Entrevista con Belle<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belle obtuvo su primer credencial para el cuidado de ni\u00f1os en una base militar en el extranjero, y ella recuerda la intensa vigilancia sobre su centro; con licenciantes visitando cuatro veces al mes, quienes “te revisaban hasta la temperatura en el refrigerador.” Despu\u00e9s de servir a ni\u00f1os y familias durante d\u00e9cadas, Belle ten\u00eda la intenci\u00f3n de jubilarse, pero cuando lleg\u00f3 la pandemia, decidi\u00f3 quedarse hasta que los ni\u00f1os regresaran de tiempo completo a la escuela. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
