They\u2019re kindergartners. First day of kindergarten and online kindergarten and life \u2026 [At school] They\u2019re ten feet apart \u2026 they have to wear their mask all day \u2026 When they come back \u2026 huge change for me too, I\u2019ve been doing this for over 30 years \u2026 I became a teacher! I went from computer to computer, had my hot spot on my phone going, my iPad going, as well as my computer \u2026 five kiddos online.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>My children went through a lot of emotions \u2026 We haven\u2019t had a dog in our home for like two years \u2026 My school age kids, they\u2019re all lonely for their friends \u2026 the littler ones, they\u2019re used to all the kids in the daycare, those are their friends. But in 3<sup>rd<\/sup> grade, 4<sup>th<\/sup> grade, they didn\u2019t get to see their friends, and that was hard. So I got a dog. A little puppy, and they love it, they love to cuddle, hold the puppy, they just love it. It was a good change of pace for them.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I like that the kids are happy \u2026 It\u2019s a struggle \u2026 after online school is over, they\u2019re on individual studies \u2026 and I hate Chromebooks! Some days \u2026 you want to take it and throw it against the wall \u2026 it\u2019s the most difficult time I\u2019ve done in childcare. It\u2019s been very difficult keeping everything organized, following all the rules and guidelines. Kids aren\u2019t aware of all that\u2019s going on.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>From Our Interview with Belle<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belle obtained her first childcare license on a military base overseas and recalled intensive monitoring of her childcare, with licensors visiting four times monthly, who \u201cwould even check the temperature in your refrigerator.\u201d After serving children and families for decades, Belle had intended to retire, but once the pandemic hit, she decided to stay on until her children returned to school full-time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On any given day, Belle had ten children in her home, including toddlers and remote-schooled children from grades kindergarten through six. \u201cIt\u2019s like you go from one computer to the next computer to the next, three hours a day,\u201d she said. Her complex schedule involved supervising remote schooling, preparing lunches, ensuring quiet time for younger children, and meeting with children\u2019s teachers. \u201cFive different teachers \u2026 [they] would text me and e-mail and say \u2018she wasn\u2019t on task.\u2019 \u201d Belle became responsible for reinforcing class lessons and making sure children turned in homework. \u201cYou are responsible for them more than their parent is during the day &#8230; it\u2019s been more challenging, that\u2019s all I can say.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the challenges, however, Belle found an important benefit. \u201cI must admit that my relationships with my parents are even stronger \u2026 The parents and I had to get on the same page with the schoolwork and we did.
