{"id":322,"date":"2022-09-24T10:50:54","date_gmt":"2022-09-24T17:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/labs.wsu.edu\/europe-lab\/?page_id=322"},"modified":"2025-10-27T12:24:43","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T19:24:43","slug":"nsf-ires_plant_science","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/labs.wsu.edu\/europe-lab\/nsf-ires_plant_science\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer 2026 Plant Biology Research at Top-Notch German Research Cluster"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<table id=\"tablepress-3\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/2214\/2022\/09\/SBS-Tegeder-lab-1024x768-1-396x297.jpg\" alt=\"Plant Science Students\" width=\"396\" height=\"297\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-362\" \/><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/2214\/2022\/09\/Germanstudents_2-396x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"297\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-374\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-3 from cache -->\n<p>Funded by a $300,000 award from the National Science Foundation\u2019s International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) initiative, WSU will develop cohorts of carefully selected, diverse<a href=\"https:\/\/news.wsu.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/11\/future-student-exchange-to-germany-explores-resilient-high-yielding-crops\/\"> IRES scholars as globally educated students for international leadership in Plant Biology research<\/a> that emphasizes solutions to the huge challenges of sustainable food production.<\/p>\n<p>A yearly cohort of WSU students from the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) will participate in a summer 10-week research program in Germany at CEPLAS \u2014 the Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences, which integrates the resources of the Universities of Cologne and D\u00fcsseldorf, the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research, and the Forschungszentrum J\u00fclich research institute. Access the <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.wsu.edu\/europe-lab\/nsf-ires_plant_science_application\/\">application portal<\/a> to apply today.<\/p>\n<p>The four-year program will involve 24 WSU students, each of whom will receive a $9,000 fellowship for study in Cologne and D\u00fcsseldorf. Participating students will collaborate with 16 WSU professors and an equal number of CEPLAS researchers; projects will be jointly supervised by WSU and CEPLAS scientists. Students will also take part in English-taught workshops and cultural events, gaining familiarity with the culture and language of that European Union country.<\/p>\n<p>Using advanced technologies and performing experiments in CEPLAS\u2019 world-class laboratories, students will develop system-scale models of plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, perform gene co-expression analyses, investigate metabolic reactions, and employ advanced biochemical and biophysical techniques.
