This expansion will in turn provide solid foundations and additional experience and expertise to compete for large-scale international-partnership grants from both domestic and European sources. Participating in this project are WSU&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/cas.wsu.edu\/\"> College of Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cahnrs.wsu.edu\/\">College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resources Sciences<\/a>, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.wsu.edu\/\">School of the Environment,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/honors.wsu.edu\/\">Honors College<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/vcea.wsu.edu\/\">Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture<\/a>. Through this project, WSU is initiating an envisaged mutually beneficial long-term collaboration with the Scan Design Foundation to foster the foundation\u2019s mission to advance Danish American relations by supporting cultural exchanges focused on environmental sustainability\u200b.<\/p>\n<p>One of WSU\u2019s core beliefs is that the university should engage globally for the future of the planet. Hence, the envisioned international education and research collaboration will be achieved through <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.wsu.edu\/europe-lab\/environment\/\">student exchanges<\/a> between WSU and Danish universities and WSU faculty members visiting in Denmark with counterparts at Danish universities to discuss environmental-sustainability education and research collaboration opportunities. These are the activities supported by this Scan Design Foundation project. Through their synergistic international collaborations, WSU professors and their Danish counterparts are anticipated to advance education and research more effectively, efficiently, and rapidly than allowed by the resources of any single institution. Such advances, in turn, would increase the number of jointly authored publications and grant proposals to U.S., Danish, and European Union agencies in support of environmental-sustainability research and development.<\/p>\n<div id=\"Foundations\">\u00a0_<\/div>\n<p><strong>Foundations for Follow-on Externally Funded Programs<\/strong><br \/>\nThe joint supervision of exchange students and research collaboration, furthermore, will provide needed solid foundations and additional experience and expertise to develop compelling international collaboration grant proposals under the following Scan Design Foundation, NSF, and EU programs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scandesignfoundation.org\/\">Scan Design Foundation<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Funding for potential continuation of this project, also with support for Danish students and faculty<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/programid\/505656?org=OISE&amp;from=home\">International Research Experiences for Students\u00a0(IRES)<\/a> \u2013 Funding to support students on research-&amp;-study abroad experiences<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/programid\/506146?org=OISE&amp;from=home\">Global Centers\u00a0(GC)<\/a> Use-Inspired Research Addressing Global Challenges in Climate Change and Clean Energy<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/programid\/505584?org=OISE&amp;from=home\">Accelerating Research through International Network-to-Network Collaborations\u00a0(AccelNet)<\/a> \u2013 Formation of networks of research networks to accelerate the expansion of scientific knowledge<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu\/\">Erasmus+<\/a> European Union program to support US and European researchers and students on international exchanges to promote transatlantic education and research collaborations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The PI of this Scan Design Foundation project, <a href=\"mailto:joseph.iannelli@wsu.edu\">Dr. Joseph Iannelli<\/a> (VCEA), has developed WSU&#8217;s current partnerships with Denmark&#8217;s Aalborg University and Aarhus University, and attracted and contributed to attract to WSU over $900,000 from NSF\u2019s IRES and EU\u2019s Erasmus+ programs, in addition to the funding for this project. The related grant proposals that generated all of these funds are available to all interested WSU parties as templates to develop new grant proposals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"Aarhus\">_<\/div>\n<h4>Aarhus University &amp; Environmental Sciences<\/h4>\n<p>The leading partner university in Denmark in this Scan Design Foundation project is <a href=\"https:\/\/international.au.dk\/\">Aarhus University<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/international.au.dk\/about\/profile\/top-reasons-to-choose-aarhus-university\">top 100 research intensive university<\/a>.<\/p>\n<iframe class=\"shortcake-bakery-responsive\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/embed\/VZ-fb33P_3M\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<p>The university distinguishes itself for the breadth and depth of its environmental-sustainability education and research programs, led by the following renowned academic units.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dce.au.dk\/en\/\">DCE &#8211; Danish Centre For Environment And Energy<\/a> \u2013 This is the university\u2019s central unit for knowledge exchange within the areas of nature, environment, climate and energy. The DCE associated <a href=\"https:\/\/dce.au.dk\/en\/about-dce\/departments\">departments<\/a> conduct multifaceted environmental-sustainability research, including, but not limited to circular bioeconomy, sea research, and marine nature restoration.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1004 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/2214\/2024\/02\/Sustainability_header_03-2022_1920x720-396x163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watec.au.dk\">Aarhus University Center for Water Technology (WATEC)<\/a> &#8211; Water is essential for life on Earth as it is used for nutrient and waste transport as well as in heat regulation. As it contains nutrients and wastes, water may be associated with eutrophication or loss of valuable nutrients. An interdisciplinary research centre focusing on developing solutions to local and global \u2018Grand Challenges\u2019, WATEC also conducts research on surface and ground water management. Through an interdisciplinary approach, WATEC has been generating nuanced understandings of the\u00a0processes and dynamics in most parts of the water cycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecos.au.dk\/en\/\">Department of Ecoscience<\/a> \u2013 The department leads education and research programs on life, with topics spanning from bacteria to whales, from genes to ecosystems and from basic research to applied biology in nature management and biotechnology. Its main <a href=\"https:\/\/ecos.au.dk\/en\/researchconsultancy\/research-areas\">research areas<\/a> include, but are not limited to Biodiversity, Environmental Management, and Lake &amp; Terrestrial Ecology. The Ecoscience department <a href=\"https:\/\/ecos.au.dk\/en\/about-us\/organisation\">professors<\/a> welcome opportunities for international collaboration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/envs.au.dk\/en\/\">Department of Environmental Science<\/a> \u2013 The department conducts problem-oriented research, spanning <a href=\"https:\/\/envs.au.dk\/en\/about-the-department\">environmental ecology, chemistry, and physics, as well as interactions between the environment and society in economic, political, and social terms<\/a>. The department manages <a href=\"https:\/\/envs.au.dk\/en\/centers\">six research centers<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/envs.au.dk\/en\/about-the-department\/contact-information\">administrators<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/envs.au.dk\/en\/about-the-department\/staff-members\">faculty and staff<\/a> welcome opportunities for international collaboration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1003 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/2214\/2024\/02\/MOI_Blog_jpg-396x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nat.au.dk\/en\">Faculty of Natural Sciences<\/a> \u2013 The faculty tackles societal challenges through basic scientific research, interdisciplinarity, and business collaboration with focus on sustainable solutions. The faculty encompasses the fields of biology, geoscience, physics, chemistry, and molecular biology. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/nat.au.dk\/en\/research\/sustainability-and-climate-change\">research programs<\/a> focus on sustainability and climate change. International research collaboration is welcome and may be discussed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/nat.au.dk\/en\/about-the-faculty\/management-and-administration\">faculty\u2019s management.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/geo.au.dk\/en\">Department of Geoscience<\/a> \u00a0&#8211; The department contributes to resolving global threats to the immediate and deep future sustainability of life in the Earth system. The <a href=\"https:\/\/geo.au.dk\/en\/research\/research-areas\">main departmental research thrusts<\/a> focus on deep earth systems, water resources, climate and environment, and energy &amp; natural resources.
