CE 543: Inverse Problems
Inverse problems in general and model calibration in hydrology and other fields; Calibration of models with many parameters by inversion of the governing equation given data. Introduction to the topic, basic results, focus on spatially-discretized systems and “snap-on” tools for indirect inversion. Focus is on hands-on use of PEST in inversion projects.

Survey of chemical and microbiological reactions with transport in environmental aqueous solution; quantification of equilibrium and kinetic mass transformations; sorption and diffusive mass transfer processes and mathematical formulations. Development and application of reactive transport models for oceanic, riverine, aquifer ecosystems. Practical examples with public-domain code PHREEQCII.

We will study and use state-of-the-art chemical and mathematical concepts for understanding how different compounds come about and interact in water. We will review thermodynamics of chemical transformations, the equilibria and kinetics of them, and we will figure out how to calculate the amounts of different compounds that will occur given a basic recipe of the stuff we put in the water. Initial focus will be solutes, stuff that dissolves in water, and then we will add exposure of the resulting solution to air and solid phases. Finally we will add colloids as a suspended solid particulate phase.
