These subtle muscle activations\u2014often too faint to detect with the naked eye or a camera\u2014can reveal a person\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>emotional state, engagement level, and underlying reactions<\/strong>&nbsp;to media content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike webcam-based facial expression analysis, fEMG provides&nbsp;<strong>higher sensitivity<\/strong>, allowing us to capture&nbsp;<strong>micro-expressions and covert reactions<\/strong>, even when participants are wearing a VR headset or trying to suppress their facial expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-heading--style-marked\">How it Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you experience emotions\u2014whether you&#8217;re smiling, frowning, or even trying to suppress an expression\u2014your facial muscles produce small electrical signals. These are generated by the activation of motor units within your muscles, which can be detected using surface electrodes placed over specific facial regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These signals do not always result in visible expressions, but EMG can still pick them up, making it especially useful for measuring covert or suppressed emotional reactions. By amplifying and analyzing this data, we can track:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Subtle muscle contractions<\/strong>&nbsp;that indicate emotional expressions like joy, frustration, or concentration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electrical patterns<\/strong>&nbsp;that reflect the time course and intensity of those emotions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical facial regions measured include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Corrugator supercilii<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 associated with frowning or negative affect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Zygomaticus major<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 linked to smiling or positive affect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Orbicularis oculi<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 involved in more genuine expressions of joy (i.e., \u201cDuchenne smiles\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-heading--style-marked\">Why Do We Measure Facial EMG in Our Studies? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Murrow Media Mind Lab, facial EMG gives us a powerful lens into the emotional and cognitive engagement of media users. Unlike self-reports or visible behavior, EMG captures subtle muscle activations\u2014sometimes occurring without the participant&#8217;s awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Measuring Emotional Response<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Detects fine-grained emotional expressions, including&nbsp;subtle smiles and frowns&nbsp;that aren&#8217;t visibly noticeable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides a&nbsp;highly accurate index of emotional valence, distinguishing positive (zygomatic) from negative (corrugator) reactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding Attention &amp; Engagement<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Reveals how facial expressions change during emotionally compelling or cognitively demanding content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlights peak engagement moments through increased muscle activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Studying Social and Internal Influences<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Allows researchers to\u00a0study startle responses, emotional regulation, and muscle activity during decision-making.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allows us to understand audience reactions that are culturally, personally, or socially shaped.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-heading--style-marked\">How We Measure Facial EMG in Our Lab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We use&nbsp;<strong>BIOPAC<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>iMotions<\/strong>&nbsp;systems to collect high-resolution facial EMG data from participants.
