RESEARCH SCOPE

Occupational Sleep Medicine is a field focusing on sleep and performance in real-world operations. Fatigue Risk Management Systems are a primary focus in this field of research. Our team also works with elite athletes to understand the interaction between elite sport, sleep and performance.

RESEARCH FOCUS

The Occupational Sleep Medicine group provides scientific expertise on sleep and performance to commercial aviation, other modes of transportation, and generally to individuals in arenas where human performance is critical, such as with elite athletes. One of the primary focuses of our work is on the development and implementation of Fatigue Risk Management Systems, with a particular emphasis on aviation short-, long- and ultra-long haul operations, to sustain performance and mitigate safety risk. This work is informed by field studies measuring operator sleep, fatigue, sleepiness, and performance. Our team also works with a broad range of other populations to increase sleep and cognitive performance, to aid in prevention of deleterious impacts of lack of adequate sleep and promote quick recovery, as well as to increase long term health and overall quality of life.
