RESEARCH SCOPE
Occupational Sleep Medicine is a new field focusing on sleep and performance in real-world operations. Fatigue Risk Management Systems are one of the primary focuses in this field of research.
RESEARCH FOCUS
The Occupational Sleep Medicine Group provides scientific expertise on sleep and performance to commercial aviation, other modes of transportation, and generally to operations in which human performance is critical. The work focuses on the development and implementation of Fatigue Risk Management Systems to sustain performance and mitigate safety risk and is informed by field studies measuring operator sleep, fatigue, sleepiness, and performance. Our team is currently focusing on Fatigue Risk Management Systems used to mitigate performance decrements in commercial aviation pilots flying ultra-long range international routes. These longer routes come with their own unique set of challenges to mitigating performance decrements, fatigue, and sleepiness to ensure operational safety.
