There are many decisions to be made in designing a landscape dependent on various environments and desired objectives of a space. This study outlines the fundamental parameters that influence the size and amount of lawn\/turfgrass that can be used in a given landscape and explores then in eight different landscaping types in both urban and rural environments. <\/h6>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IS HAPPENING?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n
This study aims to provide designers and homeowners with a better understanding of the fundamental parameters that influence the size and amount of lawn\/turfgrass that can be used in a given landscape. By providing this information, designers and homeowners will be able to make informed decisions regarding their landscape design based on their environment and their desired objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Peer-reviewed research data was compiled to determine each typologies effectiveness of its infiltration, runoff quality, air quality, cooling capabilities, and wellbeing benefits. The eight typologies that were analyzed were 1. All Garden 2. All Lawn 3. Lawn Garden Combination 4. Synthetic Turf 5. Xeriscaping 6. Clover 7. Soil 8. No Maintenance (Weeds). Each of these typologies were reviewed at two different scales: 1000\u2019x1000\u2019 Urban and 30\u2019x30\u2019 Residential. The team used Lumion and Adobe CC as the primary digital modeling and rendering software to create graphics which reflects the data collected from the literature review. By creating visuals for both Urban and Residential scales, we are able to provide designers and homeowners with the key beneficial factors of each design typology in a simple and digestible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT WE DID<\/h5>\n\n\n\n
Over the course of a 12-month time period, our team conducted an extensive literature review and case study analysis which led to graphically modeling the collected data for eight different design typologies in two different scales. 1) determine the various environmental and social benefits and challenges of the eight most common design styles by conducting a literature review to collect data on each typology’s environmental and social contexts. 2) model the data in a series of design typology graphics which reflect the information collected to further showcase each design option with its strengths and shortcomings for the benefit of designers and homeowners.<\/p>\n\n    <\/section>\n\n\n

THE EIGHT TYPOLOGIES <\/p>\n\n\n\n
XERISCAPING<\/strong>
Xeriscaping is making its way into more mainstream design as its water-wise benefits prove beneficial to landowners.  With the use of native plants, overall diversity and aesthetics can still be achieved in the same way a traditional garden can.  By cooling the air temperature and infiltrating water despite the lack of need for it, a xeriscaped space is efficient when established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CLOVER<\/strong>
A growing alternative to a traditional all-lawn landscape, the clover lawn provides more ecological benefits.  Clover has the ability to grab nitrogen from the atmosphere and sequester it into the soil increasing its health and nutrient makeup.  It also has the ability to grow in compacted soil which is common in urban landscapes and can increase infiltration through its deeper root depth of two feet.  With the reduction of fertilizer needs, the clover also attracts pollinators when it flowers while also self-seeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MULCH<\/strong>
With the absence of plant diversity, an all-mulch\/dirt\/rock landscape in an urban setting only provides a few ecological benefits.  If the proper mulch depth is applied, runoff can be reduced significantly, and also manage soil temperature due to its insulating nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NO MAINTENANCE<\/strong>
In an urban landscape where no maintenance has\/needs to be done, the resulting space will fill with weeds.  The term weeds are just a matter of perspective, and a wild unkempt landscape can prove to have more benefits than it looks.  The resulting spontaneous plant growths are able to pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequester carbon back into the earth while also stabilizing the soil through its root systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IT MEANS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n
Our research demonstrates that landscape design is a powerful tool for creating more livable cities, but success requires moving beyond simple aesthetic choices to evidence-based performance thinking. The communities demanding landscapes that deliver on environmental and social objectives are right to expect more, and our research shows it’s absolutely achievable. By understanding the strengths and limitations of different landscape typologies, we can make informed decisions that create urban spaces that are not only beautiful but actively contribute to environmental health, community well-being, and urban resilience. The path to more livable cities literally starts from the ground up, with thoughtful landscape design that serves both people and planet. <\/p>\n\n    <\/section>\n\n\n
