Built Environment Technology Application

BETA Lab

Discover Human-Technology Frontiers

The Built Environment Technology Application (BETA) research lab aims to improve project design, architecture, engineering, and construction by leveraging technologies. These technologies include but are not limited to Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), Virtual, Augmented, Mixed, or Extended Reality (XR), digitalization, modularization, automation, informatics, robotics, augmented or artificial intelligence, and smart and connected buildings. Technological innovations take multiple iterations and evolvements. BETA is here to collaborate with leading researchers and industry partners to apply and advance the built environment.

The BETA research lab owns the BIM lab, two Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2, three sets of HTC VIVE VR headsets, and multiple Pico Neo 3 VR headsets. BETA collaborates with other research labs in the School of Design and Construction, such as ID+CL, ModX, Reuse Design, Fab, and Trimble Technology Labs. BETA has three core teams below. Each group may consist of multiple graduate and undergraduate researchers.

  • Construction Automation and Robotics (CAR)
  • Safety, Engineering, Construction, and Technology Integration (SECTI)
  • Smart Sustainable Structural Systems (S-Quad)
VR Safety Training
Building Information Modeling (BIM)
Smart Construction Site
Virtual Design and Construction (VDC)
