CAIRE Co-Director Dr. Peng He Co-Editor a Special Issue on AI in Science Education in DISER

CAIRE Research Lab co-director Dr. Peng He co-edited a special issue on Artificial Intelligence in Science Education in Disciplinary and Interdisciplinary Science Education Research (DISER), in collaboration with Prof. Joseph S. Krajcik (Michigan State University). The special issue has now been officially published.

The issue brings together nine peer-reviewed studies from five countries across Asia, Europe, and North America, examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping science teaching and learning across K–12 and post-secondary contexts. Contributions span AI-driven formative assessment, teacher professional learning, learning analytics, and critical AI literacies in diverse educational settings.

In addition to leading the editorial process, Drs. He and Krajcik authored an editorial article to synthesize emerging scholarship and outline a forward-looking research agenda for the field. Their editorial organizes current developments into four interconnected themes:

  • Reimagining teacher preparation for an AI-infused future
  • Using AI to amplify teacher knowledge, reflection, and practice
  • Advancing student learning through AI-driven assessment and learning analytics
  • Fostering critical and community-centered AI literacies

This special issue marks a milestone in advancing global scholarship on AI in science education and reflects CAIRE’s growing leadership in shaping research and practice at the intersection of AI and equitable science learning.
