Law Enforcement Agencies
There is no cost for the agency to get involved, no matter the extent or type of project.
There are no restrictions for the types of videos or situations we are open to working with. In addition to working with body-worn camera data, we also have experience cross-reference the data with CAD records and other data types.
You do not need a formalized idea before reaching out, but merely a topic you want us to work on. For example, merely “We want to learn more about de-escalation” is sufficient to get the process started. We will work collaboratively with you to develop the research and coding to adequately be able to look at aspects of the interaction you are interested in.
We are happy to talk with you, even if you are not sure your agency will be able to commit to participating!
If you are interested in learning more on how we can support you goal to learn more about your community, feel free to fill out the Contact Form on the website or directly reach out to the Director, Dr. David Makin (dmakin@wsu.edu), and Lab Manager, Christina Shellabarger (c.shellabarger@wsu.edu), to begin the process!
Lab Assistants
Currently, we only accept active WSU students as research assistants in our lab. We work with undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty across multiple disciplines.
Due to the background check and onboarding process, we only accept new students at the beginning of each semester. The priority deadline is the final day of the semester before (e.g., to apply to participate in the Spring semester, the priority deadline is finals week of the Fall semester). We do accept students after this deadline only if there is space available, but only up until the first day of the new semester.
- Passed a research methods course (CRMJ 311, PSYCH 312, SOC 317, or HD 310)
- At least a 3.0 GPA
- Be able to pass a criminal background check
- Filled out the application
Due to the selection process, you are unable to enroll directly into the lab. You must complete the application form to be considered for acceptance. The form can be found at this link: CSI Lab Application. Students will be notified of their acceptance a couple of weeks before the new term starts.
