About My Picture
The picture is of the kids outside, it’s an outside activity. It was taken last year, more or less around this time, I think, because the kids were on school vacation. It’s an activity where they have little figures, in yellow, blue, and red, and a little receptacle, each one with a color. They are separating the figures into their receptacles by the color, and counting how many figures they are putting in. Then, after they’ve separated the figures, I have them group them in fives, in tens. And in that way, they’re learning, we’re practicing math. And they learn values, they learn grouping, and after, it’s talking together, the open-ended questions I ask them, dialogue among them.
Well, [it’s] different [now] in the sense that they are a bit more separated, and we’re in the outside area, I decided to do it outside this time. Usually the group activities, we always have them indoors. Only if it’s springtime then we’re outside, but in this time it was about doing all the group activities outdoors. The reason being oxygen, contagion, and so that they had more, like, fresh air. Well, because of the oxygen, more than anything, now that we were in COVID times and trying to, if we were going to be in groups, well, a little more of fresh, open air.
The kids are working excellently. They understand what they are doing, what the activity is, what is expected with the activity. It’s a little, like, it gets you to see them with their masks, doesn’t it? More than anything, I like [the photo] because they came to understand that we were going through a pandemic, that it was for our health, that we had to take care of ourselves. … only one child, a little on the younger side, he was the only one that I had to [tell] a lot “can you keep your mask on?” because he pulls it below his nose, it was, “can you keep your mask on?” But the photo, as I said, yeah, it’s impactful, seeing that they are there with their masks on, but, yeah, I love the way that they are working on it, understanding the activity that they’re doing.
Our Interview with Anita
Anita has been a childcare provider for 19 years. She prefers preschoolers because “the teaching and everything is based on just one level.” During the pandemic, however, one child’s mother had a baby and hoped that Anita would care for her infant. Anita initially resisted, saying, “…a baby means spending a lot more time, more commitment…it does change my routine a little with the other kids.” When the mother told Anita that she would need to remove her older child from Anita’s care to be in a new setting with her infant, so the siblings could stay together, Anita said, “I ended up folding completely…I said, okay, bring him here.”
Alongside caring for an infant, Anita was adjusting to the additional work required to “manage all the kids, together with a major pandemic”. At first, she felt panicked and “a little bit afraid of not being able to comply with all the requirements.” She also noticed how the children reacted to new procedures and routines, including anger at not being able to do things they had previously, like bringing their pillows and lying down together in a circle.
At one point, the adjustments became so overwhelming that Anita feared she might have to close. But she felt a calling to stay the course, saying about the school closures, “When the kids left school, I said no, I can’t close, because this is the time that they need it most.” She added, “little by little, one goes adjusting to it and following the routine…it’s what makes a person enter into the circle…being able to adjust little by little.”

Sobre Mi Foto
La foto, están los niños afuera, es una actividad afuera. Fue tomada el año pasado, más o menos alrededor de este tiempo, yo creo, porque ya los niños estaban de vacaciones de escuela. Es una actividad donde tienen figuritas de colores amarillos, azules, rojas y un botecito, cada quien de un color. Ellos están separando las figuras en su bote por el color y contando cuántas figuritas se están metiendo adentro. Luego ya que separan las figuras, los pongo a que me agrupen de cinco en cinco, de diez en diez. Así pues, ahí están aprendiendo, estamos practicando matemática. Y aprenden valores, aprenden agrupaciones y después el convivio, las preguntas abiertas que les hago, diálogo entre ellos.
Pues, [es] diferente [ahora] en el sentido que están un poquito más separados, y que estamos en el área de afuera, ahora elegí hacerlo afuera. Por lo regular las actividades en grupo siempre las tenemos adentro. Solo que sea en tiempo de tiempo de primavera ya estamos afuera, pero en este tiempo trataba de todas las actividades que eran grupales, hacerlas afuera. La razón del oxígeno, el contagio y pues que tuvieran más, como, al aire libre. Pues, por el oxígeno más que nada, ahora que nos tocó el tiempo del COVID y tratar de que, si nos íbamos a estar en grupo, pues un poquito más de aire fresco, libre.
Los niños trabajan excelente. Entienden lo que hacen, lo que es la actividad, lo que se espera de la actividad. Es un poquito, así como que te impacta verlos con su cubrebocas, ¿verdad? Mas que nada, me gusta [la foto] porque ellos alcanzaron a comprender que estábamos pasando por una pandemia, que era por salud, que tenemos que cuidarnos. … solamente un niño, un poco más chiquito, era él que seguido tenía que [decir], “¿puedes conservar tu cubrebocas?,” porque él se lo baja de su nariz, era de que “¿puedes conservar tu cubrebocas?” Pero la foto, digo, sí te impacta ver que están con su cubrebocas, pero, pues, me encanta la manera en la que ellos trabajan en aquello, comprendiendo la actividad que están haciendo.
Nuestra Entrevista con Anita
Anita tiene 19 años de ser proveedora de cuidado infantil. Ella prefiere a los niños preescolares porque “la enseñanza y todo se basa no más a un solo nivel.” Durante la pandemia, sin embargo, la madre de un niño dio a luz y esperaba que Anita le cuidara a su bebé. Al principio, Anita se resistió, diciendo … “tener un baby es dedicarle muchísimo más tiempo, más compromiso … pues me cambia un poquito la rutina con los demás niños.” Cuando la mamá le dijo a Anita que iba a dar de baja a su hijo mayor para cambiar de ubicación, donde pudieran estar juntos los hermanos, Anita dijo “Me acabé doblando definitivamente … le dije ok, tráemelo, tráemelo.”
Junto a cuidar a un bebé, Anita se tenía que ajustar al trabajo adicional que se requería al “juntar a todos los niños con una pandemia tan fuerte.” Al principio, sentía pánico y le “daba un poquito de miedo de no poder yo cumplir con todos los requisitos que se necesitaban.” También notaba cómo reaccionaban los niños ante los nuevos procedimientos y rutinas, incluyendo enojo al no poder hacer las cosas que solían hacer anteriormente, como traer sus almohadas y acostarse juntos en un círculo.
En un momento dado, los ajustes se volvieron tan abrumadores que Anita temía que tendría que cerrar. Pero sintió un llamado de no aflojarse; sobre las clausuras escolares, ella comentó: “cuando los niños salieron de la escuela, dije no, no puedo cerrar porque es el tiempo en el que ellos más lo necesitan.” Ella agregó, “poco a poco va uno acoplándose y siguiendo la rutina … es lo que lo hace a uno entrar en el círculo … poderse uno ir acoplando poco a poquito.”
