The kids de-stressed me, too

My photos, more than anything I wanted to take a picture related to hygiene.  As one uses disinfectants and masks quite a bit, and that’s something new for us, that we’re still not able to adapt to, and for the kids it’s quite difficult.

…it’s an inconvenience because the kids aren’t getting used to wearing their mask and to be disinfecting and disinfecting, and that one has to be separating them a lot, all the time.

[There is] frustration. Yes, because the kids, they always want to be together, playing, active.  And well,  …you see, the houses are small areas, it’s very difficult for us.

Our Interview with Gabriela

When the pandemic began, Gabriela’s primary concerns were not knowing what happened when the children she cared for left her home, as well as the damage an infection from the outside could do to her professional reputation and personal health: “When they leave my house, I don’t know what happens…I know what happens with me, but not with them…the worry, more than catching it, yes, that they give it to me, but…also that the parents might think or say that they got it at [my] house.”

Soon after the onset of the pandemic, Gabriela’s enrollment numbers dropped to below half her usual capacity. Despite the obvious impacts on her income, Gabriela found that caring for three children helped ease her worries, especially because the three were siblings, a factor she considered a stroke of luck because it reduced exposure from outside. Further reducing her exposure was the fact that she worked in her own home, so that she “didn’t have anything to go do outside.” 

Despite the challenges and frustrations of keeping her business afloat while adjusting to pandemic conditions, Gabriela maintained, “I like it, my work…The kids de-stressed me too.”

Mis fotos, más que nada quise sacar una foto relacionada con la higiene. Como usa uno bastante los desinfectantes y las mascarillas y es algo nuevo para nosotros, que todavía no nos podemos adaptar y para los niños es bien difícil.

… es como una incomodidad porque los niños no se están adaptando a traer su mascarilla y pues estar desinfectándose y desinfectándose y que tiene uno que estar separando mucho, cada ratito.

[Hay] frustración. Sí porque los niños siempre quieren andar juntos, jugando, activos. Y pues, … ves que las casas son áreas pequeñas, y se nos hace súper difícil.”

Nuestra Entrevista con Gabriela

Cuando la pandemia empezó, lo que más le preocupaba a Gabriela era el no saber qué pasaba cuando los niños a los que cuidaba salían de su casa, así como el daño que podría provocar una infección externa, tanto para su reputación profesional como su salud personal:  “Cuando ellos ya salen de mi casa yo no sé qué pasa … yo sé que pasa conmigo, pero no con ellos … la preocupación, más que el contagio, sí que me contagien, pero también que … los papás quizás piensen o digan que se contagiaron ahí en [mi] casa.”

Pronto después del inicio de la pandemia, las inscripciones de Gabriela bajaron a menos de la mitad de su capacidad usual.  A pesar de los obvios impactos en sus ingresos, Gabriela descubrió que cuidar a tres niños ayudó a aliviar sus preocupaciones, sobre todo porque los tres eran hermanos, un factor que ella consideró un golpe de suerte, porque bajó la exposición desde afuera.   Lo que redujo más su exposición era el hecho de que trabajaba en su propia casa, ya que “no tenía nada que ir a hacer afuera.”

A pesar de los retos y las frustraciones de mantener a flote su negocio mientras ajustaba a las condiciones pandémicas, Gabriela afirmó que “Me gusta a mí, mi trabajo … a mí los niños me desestresaban también.”
