Handling the Challenge Delicately
… We were open and we were functioning and we were doing things … Behind the scenes, I was just scrambling to figure out how to adapt, how to play this in this environment … and be OK.

Last October amidst Covid, we got out to this farm, the pumpkin patch … About half the kids from the daycare were able to make it. It was not a sanctioned field trip. It was a Saturday. And we met parents [there] with their kids … it was one of those rare opportunities to actually be out in public and see each other outside of the daycare. And it was also the first occasion during Covid where we were able to be out and do something …
The photo itself is kind of representative of a few things. It’s the mountain to climb … the struggle along the way … We have so many toddlers that there’s no such thing as social distancing … We’ve long since accepted the fate that if we were exposed, it was just it was going to be inevitable … In the daycare space itself, we have our masks … we always do.
Getting to that different setting was huge for us because you’re always in that same environment. It’s really nice to be able to relax every once in a while, especially this year … there’s been plenty of challenges … so many.
Our Interview with Lee
“We have a lengthy wait list,” Lee said. He and his wife opened their in-home childcare for preschool-age children about three years ago, and Lee believed that his advanced degree and years of public school teaching helped attract families to their childcare.
Of staying open in the Covid era, Lee said, “Ten of our twelve families are in the medical field … all front line … They knew what challenges they were facing, and so they were cooperative … We just made it work.” That was true initially, but as the months wore on, Lee said that some parents objected to safety measures. Following guidelines and maintaining good relationships became a difficult balancing act in the case of more than one family, a challenge that he tried “to handle delicately.”
Lee went on to frame parents’ resistance as, “just another obstacle…another thing to deal with,” in a long line of life challenges he had successfully managed. He talked about growing up in a poor family, joining the military, and getting a medical discharge after life-threatening injury. Summing up the situation, Lee said, “It’s not been easy, but for me it’s another bump in the road…you just roll with the punches. And that’s what this year has been … When we had the one parent … who didn’t want to comply, didn’t want to go with the restrictions … that was frustrating. For us, Covid is scary.”

En octubre del año pasado, en medio del Covid, nos fuimos a esta granja, el huerto de calabzas … Alrededor de la mitad de los niños de la guardería pudieron llegar. No fue una excursión sancionada. Y nos juntamos con los padres [allí], con sus hijos … fue una de esas raras oportunidades para en realidad estar en público y vernos fuera de la guardería. Y también fue la primera vez durante el Covid donde pudimos estar afuera y hacer algo …
La foto en sí es como representativa de un par de cosas. Es la montaña a subir … la lucha en el camino … Tenemos a tantos niños de primeros pasos que no existe tal cosa como el distanciamiento social … Aceptamos desde hace mucho el destino de que si llegamos a estar expuestos, era porque simplemente era inevitable… En el espacio de la guardería en sí, tenemos nuestros cubrebocas … siempre los tenemos.
Llegar a ese sitio diferente fue enorme para nosotros porque siempre estás en ese mismo ambiente. Es realmente bonito poder relajarse de vez en cuando, especialmente este año … ha habido bastantes retos … muchísimos.
Nuestra Entrevista con Lee
“Tenemos una lista de espera extensa,” dijo Lee. Él y su esposa abrieron su centro de cuidado infantil en casa para niños preescolares hace aproximadamente tres años, y Lee cree su que su título universitario avanzado y sus años de experiencia dando clases en escuelas públicas, ayudaron a atraer a familias a su centro.
Con respeto a permanecer abierto durante la época de Covid, Lee dijo, “Diez de nuestras doce familias trabajan en el campo médico … todos de primera línea … Ellos sabían a qué retos se enfrentaban y entonces estaban dispuestos a cooperar … Simplemente lo hicimos funcionar.” Esto fue verdad al principio, pero conforme iban alargando los meses, Lee dijo que algunos padres pusieron objeciones a las medidas de seguridad. Seguir las normas y todavía mantener buenas relaciones se convirtió en un acto de malabarismo para con más de una familia, un reto que él intentó “manejar delicadamente.”
Lee luego caracterizó a la resistencia de los padres como “tan solo un obstáculo más … otra cosa con que lidiar,” parte de una larga lista de retos de vida que él había superado exitosamente. Él habló sobre sus experiencias: creció en una familia pobre, se unió a las fuerzas militares, y recibió un licenciamiento honoroso después de una lesión que puso en riesgo su vida. A manera de resumen, Lee dijo, “No ha sido fácil, pero para mí es otro obstáculo más … simplemente hay que aprender a los golpes. Y así ha sido este año … cuando tuvimos un padre de familia … que no quiso cumplir, no quiso seguir las restricciones … eso fue frustrante. Para nosotros, el Covid da miedo.”
