American Forests is hiring for a restoration ecologist to lead whitebark pine restoration and conservation planning at Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic National Parks: Restoration Ecologist at American Forests (NPS Partner Position)
The ecologist will work closely with a team at the parks, with experts at American Forests, NPS parks and agencies. The ecologist can be stationed near any one of the three parks. We’re very excited about working with the ecologist to develop whitebark pine status reports, long-term restoration and monitoring plans–and the associated compliance documentation at each park–to move management of this threatened, high elevation species forward here.

Washington State Department of Natural Resources is hiring for multiple positions, both short-term (ranging from 2.5 months to 4. 5 months in summer-fall 2024) and longer-term (one year, June 2024-2025, with a chance of an extension), to conduct fish and stream habitat monitoring in the Olympic Experimental State Forest around Forks, WA.

For both positions, the research will consist of: conducting juvenile salmonid population estimates (using a backpack electrofisher), stream habitat surveys, water quality sampling, and riparian/upland forest stand surveys. Work sites are remote and will require strenuous hikes on steep slopes, often carrying heavy equipment. For the short-term positions, housing will be provided.

Lead Field Technician – Terrestrial Salamander Surveys

Washington State University-Pullman is seeking a field technician to lead terrestrial salamander surveys in southwestern Washington, with a focus on the Larch Mountain Salamander, for a collaborative research project with the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station. Primary duties will include performing daytime cover object surveys and nighttime surface activity surveys for terrestrial salamanders, collection of environmental and habitat data, data management and quality control, and providing training and supervision for field research assistants. The technician may also assist with data collection for additional project taxa during the summer months, including American Pikas and Hoary Marmots. A low-cost (approximately $200/month) shared housing space will be available through the USDA Forest Service. A field vehicle will be provided through Washington State University.
