  • SOE 305 Silviculture
    • This course will familiarize the student with both traditional methods of silviculture and ecologically-oriented silvicultural regimes.  The student will gain knowledge of silvicultural operations and their effects throughout a management cycle (regeneration to final harvest) and within landscapes.  At the conclusion of the course, the student should be able to outline a basic silvicultural prescription for several common forest types in western North America, given a set of management objectives.  Additionally, the student should be able to explain the biological and operational basis of such a prescription. 
  • SOE 413 Applications of Ecological Economics in Natural Resource Management
    • Ecological economics strives to understand and make progress towards sustainability by probing the value of nature to society, in monetary and other metrics, while assuming that the economy is embedded within ecosystems. Concepts covered include strong versus weak sustainability, natural capital, ecosystem service valuation, environmental values, degrowth, post-growth and steady state economics.
  • SOE 484 Ecological Forest Management
    • Forest management involves decision-making about a variety of activities, and requires knowledge about legal responsibilities and ecological concerns at spatial scales that range from stands to landscapes. A forest manager must be able to plan harvest, planting, site preparation, and other management activities in space and time, while remaining compliant with local, state and federal laws and responsive to ecological conditions. Forest management plans are documents that provide a planning framework for a specific property, and figure prominently in this course.
