WSU Trimble Lab resources used on on 5,000‑year‑old archeological excavation

The Kalispel Tribe of Indians in collaboration with Washington State University archeologists led by Dr. Shannon Tushingham used WSU Trimble Lab resources to study ancient Tribal earth ovens in the Inland Northwest.

“The Trimble [resources],”  according to Dr. Tushingham, “was just terrific to have, both for the research and for teaching-we used the R2 almost daily to map the site and archaeological features in conjunction with Esri Field Maps, and it was great for teaching field school students mapping and data collection skills (essential for careers in archaeology and cultural resource management).”

The research uncovers information from ancient Tribal earth ovens to develop a better understanding of Kalispel cooking techniques and diets over the past 5,000 years.

A group pf fourth-year students participating in a WSU archeological field school also got the opportunity to gain first-hand experience that they will need to pursue careers in professional archeology.
