Project Description

The Rural AI Initiative is a Washington State University system-wide effort to advance responsible and translational AI research that addresses critical challenges facing rural communities. The initiative brings together expertise across artificial intelligence, education, agriculture, environmental science, health, ethics, and community engagement to ensure that AI innovation is responsive to the distinctive needs and conditions of rural communities.

The initiative establishes a shared platform organized around five interconnected areas—AI, Data, Ethics, Education, and Partnerships—and applies these capabilities across four major innovation areas: AI for agriculture, environmental health, rural health, and rural education. Rather than adapting technologies developed primarily for data-rich and urban environments, Rural AI centers rural needs, constraints, community knowledge, and trust as core considerations in the development and adoption of AI.

Project Vision

AI innovation for rural communities requires more than access to new technologies. It requires connecting AI expertise with domain knowledge, education, ethics, and sustained community partnerships so that technologies are designed around the needs and realities of rural communities.

The Rural AI Initiative is designed to establish WSU as a national leader in impact-driven, translational AI for rural communities, while creating a reusable and scalable infrastructure for interdisciplinary research, community engagement, workforce development, and future center-scale initiatives.

AI for Rural Education

Education is one of the four major innovation areas of the Rural AI Initiative. AI for Rural Education brings together education and AI researchers to address two interconnected challenges facing rural communities: preparing educators and students for an AI-enabled future and strengthening pathways between K–12 education and the changing rural workforce.

This work focuses particularly on AI literacy, teacher preparation, and workforce-connected learning. One research direction develops a simulation-based AI platform through which preservice and in-service teachers can build AI literacy and learn to integrate AI responsibly across subject areas. A second direction develops a statewide Career and Technical Education framework connecting AI and computer science with Agricultural Education, creating opportunities for rural students to develop AI-related knowledge and skills through locally meaningful educational pathways.

Project Goals

01 /Goal 1

Build capacity for translational Rural AI research

Create shared AI, data, ethics, education, and partnership infrastructure that enables interdisciplinary teams to develop and evaluate AI innovations with rural communities.

Advance AI literacy for rural educators and students

Develop learning opportunities and AI-enabled environments that prepare preservice teachers, practicing K–12 teachers, and students to understand, evaluate, and use AI responsibly.

Develop simulation-based AI learning for educators

Design a simulation-based platform that provides teachers with opportunities to develop AI literacy and practice making instructional and ethical decisions about AI integration in authentic educational scenarios.

Connect AI education with rural workforce pathways

Develop a workforce-connected CTE framework that integrates AI and computer science with Agricultural Education and supports rural students in developing skills relevant to emerging AI-enabled careers.
