Service related to health communication

I participate in service at the department, College, University, and disciplinary level. Here I highlight some of the service I participate in related to health communication and my areas of research.

At WSU, I collaborate with Cougar Health Services on some of their text message based health promotion programs.

At the national level, I am the vice-head elect for the Communicating Science, Health, Environment and Risk Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2020, I served as the teaching chair, bringing together panels on mentorship and award-winning ComSHER teaching. In 2021 and 2022, I served as the co-research chair, helping to program the ComSHER research portion of the conference.

I was previously a member of a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine ad-hoc committee, Prevention and Control of Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United States.

I also aim to share information on strategic communication as it is beneficial for health promotion efforts. For example, this year I presented on social media strategies to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program educators in Washington state during the shift to online engagement amid COVID-19.
