WSU team wins Microsoft support to develop AI roadmap for rural schools

Dr. Tingting Li and Dr. Peng He have received $82,500 in support from Microsoft’s AI Economic Institute (AIEI) to advance the Rural AI for Societal Equity (RAISE) initiative.

Dr. Li was selected as one of only 17 Senior Fellows worldwide in this highly competitive global cohort. The Microsoft AI Economic Institute brings together scholars from nine countries to examine how artificial intelligence is reshaping economic opportunity and access across sectors, including education.

Through the RAISE project, the research team will collaborate with K–12 educators in Eastern Washington, North Idaho, and Eastern Oregon to co-develop an evidence-based roadmap for responsible AI integration in rural schools. The work builds upon prior community partnerships and centers the voices of teachers and local stakeholders in shaping sustainable AI adoption strategies.

The resulting RAISE Roadmap will connect educators, researchers, and technology partners to promote equitable and community-grounded AI implementation in rural districts.
