Opportunities in the Tanaka lab
Postdoctoral researchers
We welcome postdoctoral researchers with a strong interest in molecular plant pathology, particularly in understanding innate immune sensing and signaling during plant-pathogen interactions. Candidates with expertise in molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry are encouraged to apply. In your initial inquiry, please outline a potential project you could develop in our lab, detailing your research approach, expected outcomes, and how your background aligns with our ongoing work. A well-defined research plan and demonstrated ability to communicate scientific ideas effectively are essential. We encourage applicants to seek independent funding. Potential funding sources include LSRF, NSF PRFB, NSF SEES Fellows, USDA AFRI EWD fellowships, Human Frontier Science Program, and WRF.
Graduate students
Graduate students in our lab investigate plant-microbe interactions with a focus on cellular immune responses in both model plants and crops. Research projects integrate advanced technologies such as molecular cloning, gene expression analysis, cellular signaling measurements, and genetic transformation. Students will be trained in formulating research questions, designing hypothesis-driven studies, and developing rigorous experimental approaches. Applicants with strong backgrounds in plant molecular biology, molecular genetics, or biochemistry are encouraged to apply. Interested students should send a CV and a brief description of their research experience and interests. Graduate students can apply through the Department of Plant Pathology or the Molecular Plant Science Program. While we typically provide funding through research grants, we strongly encourage prospective students to pursue independent fellowships, such as NSF GRFP, FFAR Fellows, And USDA AFRI EWD, to gain experience in grant writing and research proposal development.
Undergraduate students
We welcome undergraduate students who can commit at least 12 hours per week to research in our lab. Students should have a strong interest in molecular biology and biochemistry of plant-microbe interactions and demonstrate motivation and a solid work ethic. Opportunities to join our lab include: Volunteering, Work-study, Research for credit (PL_P 499), and Honors thesis program. We encourage students to present their research at the WSU Summer Symposium and SURCA. Please contact us for more information.
High school students and teachers
We offer summer research opportunities for high school students and teachers interested in molecular plant pathology. Please contact us for more details.
