About John

John Bussey is an incoming cotutelle (dual degree) PhD student at Washington State University studying Materials Science and Engineering and at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, Université Paris Cité studying earth science. He researches glasses and glass-ceramics with applications including nuclear waste immobilization, earth science, and archeology. His current projects involve advanced x-ray, GHz, and positron characterization, as well as the behavior of halides, actinides, and transition metals in alumino(boro)silicate glasses and melts. Previous research includes cement-rock interactions, mineralized waste forms, lunar dust mitigation, scientific computing, and developing pedagogical glass compositions. He is currently supported as a 2025 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and is just finishing his tenure as the 9th Corning Inc. Glass Age Scholar. In his free time he enjoys backpacking, mountaineering, skiing,  trail running, disc golf, and pickleball.
