CEM Discover 2.0
|
Microwave SynthesizerThe Discover® 2.0 is a microwave reactor designed for both organic and inorganic synthesis. It features a 300 mL single-mode microwave cavity, allowing precise and homogeneous energy delivery to the reaction medium. The instrument is controlled through a 10-inch touchscreen interface and includes a flexible software environment where users can design protocols involving multiple heating and cooling stages.

Temperature and pressure are monitored in situ throughout the experiment, with data continuously recorded and exportable for analysis. A 5-megapixel camera inside the cavity enables real-time visualization and video recording of reactions, which can be particularly useful for monitoring heterogeneous systems or reactions involving color changes, precipitates, or gas evolution.
The system includes variable-speed magnetic stirring and a compressed air cooling module, allowing rapid temperature cycling without manual intervention. It supports a range of vessel volumes from 10 to 100 mL, made of pressure-resistant laboratory-grade Pyrex or Teflon, depending on chemical compatibility and temperature requirements.
Microwave heating offers significant advantages in synthetic chemistry. Because energy is delivered volumetrically and directly to the reaction mixture, heating is faster and often more selective compared to conventional methods. This allows for shorter reaction times, improved reproducibility, and, in many cases, access to reactivity not observed under standard conditions. The Discover® 2.0 also incorporates an automatic gas venting system that safely releases overpressure during reactions, minimizing vial failure and enabling the use of simple snap-on caps rather than crimped seals.
